Have you heard of the Shingles Vaccine?
Dr. Rider Recommends the Shingles Vaccine (Zostavax) for all patients 60 and older
- Without the vaccine, your risk if you are over 60 years of age, is at least 1 in 100 (Dr. Rider is seeing at times several cases a week).
- Without the vaccine, your risk of having severe pain if you do get shingles 1 month after the rash is gone is about 50%.
- Fortunately, the vaccine is not a painful one, similar to the seasonal flu vaccine.
- Unfortunately, it is expensive ($250) and is not covered by Medicare part B or by some insurance plans. It is, however, covered at least partially by all Medicare part D plans. Please contact your insurance plan first to determine the amount you will be responsible for. Let us know if you wish to have an itemized receipt to present to your insurance company yourself.
ALSO, there is currently a shortage in supply, but we are ordering vaccine for November right now. Get on our list today!
